Vestibular Physiotherapy in Wakefield
Dizziness, vertigo or disequilibrium is a common symptom reported by adults. The symptoms can be a result of dysfunction of the balance organs of the inner ear or dysfunction of one or more parts of the central nervous system. These three symptoms can have a common link but have different meanings and the right description is essential for a diagnosis.
Vestibular rehabilitation therapy or VRT is an exercise-based therapy to promote the central nervous system compensate for inner ear deficits.
Vestibular compensation is a process that allows the brain to regain balance control and minimise dizziness symptoms when there is damage to, or an imbalance between, the right and left vestibular organs (balance organs) in the inner ear.
Essentially, the brain copes with the disorientating signals coming from the inner ears by learning to rely more on alternative signals coming from the eyes, ankles, legs and neck to maintain balance.
VRT can help with a variety of vestibular problems, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis and vestibular hypofunction associated with Ménière’s disease
